Josef Rheinberger

I am ashamed to say that I only began to study and learn  the organ works of Josef Rheinberger in 2021. I picked up a collection of his organ pieces in an antique shop 40 years ago but only opened it in March 2021. I am extremely impressed and intend to learn all of them. You have been warned!

preludio

This is the first piece in my book and, my, what a first piece to learn by Rheinberger! Such relentless chromaticism yet so tuneful. I performed this in church and recorded it at home in April 2021.

canzonetta

So different from the Preludio! A charming melody with a very surprising accompaniment containing many harmonic surprises. I learned, performed and recorded this piece in May 2021.

MONOLOGUE NO. VI

Despite its uninspiring (and in my view extremely misleading) title, this is a remarkable trio. Rheinberger uses the melody from J. S. Bach's Chorale "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" from the St. Matthew Passion as the bass part (played by the pedals). Above this he superimposes a charming duet, which I play on a flute and a cromorne. The harmonies are complex yet the piece retains a graceful air of simplicity. "L'art qui cache l'art". Recorded at home in July 2021.

I also recorded this piece in Penarth Methodist Church, near Cardiff, Wales, in July 2021. The melodies are played on a violin stop on the choir and gedackt and gamba on the swell.

Passacaglia

I must admit that I was disappointed when I first began studying this piece a few weeks ago, because it is so different from the pieces above. However, it grew on me. The way Rheinberger uses this medieval form is very ingenious. The Passacaglia is based on a chromatic melody played by the pedals which alternates between the relative minor and major keys and is transposed a few times. Above this, he interweaves 3 romantic motifs on the keyboards leading to a dramatic cadenza.
