alfred jethro silver

A surprise!

I had never heard of Silver, until I came across a piece of music - "Jubilate Deo" which appears below - in a stack of unread works which I had purchased back in the 1980's. What a pleasant surprise!

Who was he?

I was unable to find anything about him in the usual music reference books (Grove's, Oxford Companion, History etc.) but I did find the following  short biographical note on the website of the German publishing house, Bardon, who also publish a few of his other organ compositions. (Of course, I have rushed to order them!)

Life

Dr. Alfred Jethro Silver, Mus. D. (Dunelm), FRCO, (born Windsor,1870, died Birmingham, England 1935) studied at St. George's School Windsor and became assistant organist at St. George's Chapel. He served as organist at Clewer Parish Church {1888), Ealing Parish Church (1889), St. David's, Merthyr Tydfil (1892) and Carmarthen Parish Church (1897). He spent the rest of his career as Music Master at the Grammar School and Organist at the Parish Church of Handsworth, Birmingham, England.

Works

In addition to several organ solos, Silver published many arrangements for the organ of well-known orchestral pieces (in particular by Tchaikowsky).

Jubilate deo

This is the first piece by Silver which I have learned and performed and what an amazing work this is! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did playing it.

Reverie in d

This second piece I learned could not have been more different from the Jubilate. A wistful, romantic, slightly twee, melody: very English, very typical of the early 20th century. I performed and recorded this in September 2021.

POSTLUDE

What a rumbustious, joyful voluntary to end a service! It reminds me of many 1920's pieces for British colliery brass bands. Such fun to play! The congregation in my local church loved it.

cradle song

A very different piece: a gentle lullaby.

Prelude in f sharp minor

Silver packs so much into this short Prelude! A haunting melody, remarkable modulations, a great variety of registrations leading to a magnificent crescendo followed by a subtle pianissimo. I think this is my favourite piece by Silver - so far!
